Puppy Essentials for your Home & Garden
Below are some ideas on how to puppy-proof your home and some essentials you need to look at getting for your pouch. This list is not exhaustive, and if you have any ideas of your own, please feel to submit these to us.
Puppy Crates

Your dog needs to have its own house within your home. This will become his safe area, retreat here during the day, and sleep there at night. Train your puppy to love his new home, the rewards will be for both of you and very welcome. Make sure this is big enough to grow into but not too large. There are options to have a divider in to reduce the size and expand during your puppy's growth.
Door/Stairs Gate

It is important to give your puppy boundaries. They will appreciate this and also keep them safe.

A stair/door gate will help keep him safe from entering rooms and or stairs when you are not around.
Puppy Pen

Similar to the stairs gate, having a puppy pen is flexible to move around the home and section areas off both in the home and outside. Personally, these have been a great help and we have three in our home.

The cage has 8 sections that can be moved around to the shape of your area.
Puppy Beds

If your puppy cage is in one room, but your puppy will spend time in another room in the day or evening, you may find a cosy dog bed is just the treat for daytime lounging. We all like something to be cosy in when we are having a snooze.
Puppy Toilet Training

Every hour and after every meal you should be taking your dog outside to toilet them. You should also read the signs when they start sniffing. Use the same word every time you go outside, we use, toilet, and always praise them for going outside and a little treat to show that this is good behaviour.
There will always be accidents but do not punish your dog for this. Use all those old towels you have stored away and lay them on the floor, far cheaper than puppy pads and more environmentally friendly.
Start your dog off early with toilet bell training. This is when the puppy will knock on the bell to go outside. The downside is that our dog rings them when he wants attention too. Always open the door if he rings them, he will get the message that this means to go outside.
Dog Food

Keep on the same food your breeder has started them off on, and if you want to change the food to another brand do this over a few days by adding a small amount until you change over. Make sure you have good quality food that is right for your type of puppy
Spark Guard

Your puppy will be attracted to your fire and fireplace. A full guard around the whole fireplace or just a guard in front of the fire is essential to avoid a puppy going for the coals or touching the hot fire.

Don't leave anything on the fire hearth like candles. It is not the puppy's fault he will go and pick them up, you are setting up the puppy to fail and possibly hurt themselves..
Cupboard Locks

If you intend your puppy to spend ANY time in the kitchen or areas where you do not want him to go into your cupboards then think about fitting cupboard locks, especially in the kitchen just like you would with a baby or young child.

Your puppy will be very nosey and want to explore all the areas you go into.
Electrical Cables

Don't let the puppy be exposed to cables within the home. Again exposed or untidy cables will be a draw for your puppy to go and play with them, this could lead to potentially serious consequences for your puppy.
One idea is to block them off to avoid getting to cables, or even use a cable tray to tidy them up and keep them safe.
Puppy Clipper

Multi-dog clipping set comes with all the items you need to keep your puppy trim. This set is highly recommended and the trimmer itself is quiet and easy to use and comes with all the attachments.
Training Whistle

Using the book Total Recall' you will need this dog whistle which is pitched at 210.5. These are set at a frequency that your dog can hear well but is low noise to humans. The good thing about this whistle is that if you lose are break the whistle you can buy the same pitched whistle very easily again. Never use a different-pitched whistle after training your puppy otherwise it will not have the same effect.

The Acme whistle is a British brand and has been making whistles for many years in Birmingham. Can not recommend it enough.
Puppy Cam

Keep an eye on your puppy whilst you are out or even upstairs busy. This versatile standalone CCTV is so easy to set up, plug in the mains and connect to your Wi-Fi and watch on your phone.
It has a rotational 360 Coverage Viewing, Motion Detection,2-Way Audio, Night Vision and works with Alexa

Car Carry Crate

To keep your puppy safe when you are transporting them around in the car, it is advisable to put them in a carry crate. If you put some bedding in there this will become his safe place when travelling.

Most dogs do not like cars, but after a period of time, and being carried around in his safe case he will get used to it.

The fabric ones are great as they flat pack down very easily when not in use.
